Food Vision 2030
Food Vision 2030 Executive Summary
Louisville’s Food Vision 2030 outlines a transformative plan to create a just, resilient, and sustainable food system by 2030. This document, informed by two years of community collaboration supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, focuses on ways to make healthy, fresh food more available to all Louisvillians while simultaneously improving local livelihoods and environmental health. The diverse Food Vision Team included food educators, community activists, and farmers from organizations across our city who conducted interviews, surveys, and focus groups with nearly 500 of our neighbors. Our plan reflects their aspirations for a better food system.
Food Vision 2030 advances three visions with goals to achieve each:
Healthy Local Food For All
• Strengthen systems to get healthy, local food to hungry people.
• Ensure access to fresh, local food in ways that especially benefit producers and eaters of color and low-income
residents.
A Just Resilient and Sustainable Food Economy
• Support the Development of Independent and Locally Owned Food Businesses in Historically Redlined Neighborhoods.
• Improve pay and working conditions for all people, especially those working in the food system.
• Strengthen urban & regional food production and Infrastructure.
• Use food systems planning to build resilient communities in the face of climate and other emergencies.
Environmental Justice
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions through food reuse and recycling.
• Incorporate farming into plans that make the city cooler and reduce flooding.
• Reduce exposure to toxins from air, soil and water
through food system change.
Achieving our Vision requires partnerships between community-led
organizations, local government, and state policymakers. The
Vision calls for new local and state legislative initiatives with funding
priorities to improve everyone’s quality of life. By using food systems
thinking and intentionally including food access as a part of our local
planning processes, we can make significant changes to our well-being
and our environment. Through community engagement, policy change,
and sustainable practices, the Vision aspires to build a food system that
is just, equitable, and resilient in the face of future challenges.
